Ghent 4
Just behind St. Bavo's Cathedral is a very interesting historical square , which belonged to a wealthy and prominent local family. The main feature was the 15th century tall round tower topped with an octagonal Renaissance belvedere or vantage point. There was also a secondary, plainer red brick tower. Following this I went on a relaxing boat ride on Ghent's network of canals, which took me under several picturesque bridges and past many outstanding buildings, with one Guildhall dating back to the 12th century. I then had lunch at the Great Butchers' Hall, a splendid, covered market hall with cured hams hanging from the rafters, Spanish style, dating back to the 15th century and which today promotes regional products. Tomorrow I take the train furthet north in Flanders to Bruges.
Bon appetite Neil🍽
